Capsule for the Day
The elder brother of the prodigal son is often not talked about. We tend to focus more on the prodigal son and his father. But there is something unique about the elder brother, something we can learn from him. In simple terms, he is the good guy. One who kept all the rules.
He was faithful to his father in his own terms and was comfortable in his self-righteousness. He wasn't opened to the reality around him. He only saw black and white, and had no room for the grey spots. For him, his father was breaking the rules by celebrating his younger brother's return.
This accounts for his anger, his rage. He couldn't understand his father's act of mercy. His younger brother deserves to be punished for wasting his inheritance. And this is the problem with human perfectionism; it only sees the wrong and not the person, but mercy is about the person.
