Capsule for the Day
Notice, while the Pharisees saw Matthew as a "plague" to be avoided, Jesus saw him as a "gift of God" that has to be found and treasured as an Apostle. It was the same Matthew, but different perceptions. And so it is with every other person. We generally see in others what we want to see.
But as Christians, we shouldn't be limited to seeing what we want to see in others. We should grow to see what God wants us to see. "Go and learn the meaning of the words" Jesus said, "what I want is mercy, not sacrifice". And mercy is simply seeing beyond who a person appears to be.
But it doesn't end there, it goes on to reveal to the person who he or she can be and to assist him or her to be that person. Jesus did that with Matthew. He is doing that with us, and He expects us to do same. However, it can be hard to practise mercy. But by His Grace, it is possible and easy.
