Capsule for the Day
"Happy are the pure in heart for they shall see God". What a promise, to see God! First, this was countercultural. In Judaism, it is believed no one sees God and lives. Does that mean those who will see Him by virtue of being pure in heart will die? That was the question, I guess, in the mind of Jesus' audience. But He meant more than literally seeing God.
The pure in heart are those who are one with God, as in they have a singularity of purpose - God. They live with the purity of being created in "the image and likeness of God". They are in tune with God and His ways. Thus, they can see Him, His plans and His purposes. No wonder they are happy. For nothing satisfies the human heart more than seeing God.
But our seeing God on earth is in anticipation of our seeing Him as He really is in heaven. So, the promise of this beatitude transcends the temporal to the eternal. It offers us the hope of being united with God forever in heaven. Another reason this beatitude leaves us happy. Christ wants us to be happy. Thus, He offers purity in heart as the way to happiness.
