Capsule for the Day

The easiest way to discredit the goodness of God is to point to human suffering, to evil. Flannery O'Connor puts it this way "One of the tendencies of our age is to use the suffering of children to discredit the goodness of God, and once you have discredited his goodness, you are done with him..." This is true of the human person as it is true of God.

We see this in the story of the Biblical Job. His friends couldn't believe he was a good man because of his misfortunes. That hurt Job. People easily make judgements of us from apparent reality. Our misfortunes tend to strip us of our goodness. "Happy are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake..." gives us another view of suffering.

The fact that we are going through rough times, or we are confronted with the reality of evil doesn't mean we aren't good. Nor is it true that "we are the problem". Perhaps, it is because we are good. Opposites as we know attract. Thus, in trying "to be right with God" (righteousness) we attract misfortune. When this is our story we should be happy.
