Biblical David was a man who understood how prayer and fasting work. ‘When the child was alive’ he answered ‘I fasted and wept because I kept thinking, “Who knows? Perhaps the Lord will take pity on me and the child will live.” But now he is dead, why should I fast? Can I bring him back again? I shall go to him but he cannot come back to me.’
The above passage from 2 Samuel 12: 22-23 was David's answer to the question his officers asked him in verse 21. David fasted and prayed that God might keep his child alive. God answered David by training him through fasting and prayer to accept His will. Søren Kierkegaard puts it this way, "prayer doesn't change God, it changes us".
David was a changed man after fasting and praying. His officers noticed the change but they couldn't understand what was going on. They expected David to be uptight when he heard his child was dead, rather David had a celebration. Friends, sometimes God answers our prayers like David's by changing us or granting us the serenity to accept....
