Capsule for the Day
We live in a world where things aren't always what they appear to be. There is always something deeper that defies our expertise. Often, we settle for the apparent and miss out on the real. In the movie "Brain on Fire" Susannah Cahalan tells her story. While at first sight she appeared to be a psychiatric case, in reality, she was a medical case.
It took the courage of her parents, who believed their daughter couldn't be bipolar nor schizophrenic, to pressurise the doctors to look deeper and to get to the real. Imagine if they had settled for the given, they would have lost their daughter to mental health. But it wasn't easy for her parents. The doctors at some point felt her parents were in denial.
And so it is with the many Susannahs out there. The given is being taken for the real, and "wrong diagnoses" are made. There seems to be no one to fight for them, to take the trouble to listen, to dig deeper, to get to the real. So, what shall we do? Are we going to lose them to wrong diagnosis? Lord, give us the courage to change the things we can.
