The opening paragraph of the Catechism of the Catholic Church is very revealing. "God", the Catechism says, "infinitely perfect and blessed in Himself, in a plan of sheer goodness freely created man (humanity) to make him share in his own blessed life. For this reason, at every time and in every place, God draws close him". He created us for Himself.
This is what St. Paul is on about in Ephesians 1:4-5 "even as He chose us in Him... and destined us in love to be His sons and daughters through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of His will". Paul is stating in this passage that God has a plan for each and every one of us. That from the beginning we are part of a plan, our role in it is unique.
Although this role is predestined, it isn't predetermined. We have the freedom to accept it or to ignore it. However, when we choose to ignore it, we become restless, unfulfilled. St. Augustine captures this beautifully when he said, "our hearts are made for You, O Lord, and they are restless until the rest in You". Thus, we find rest when we fulfil the Plan.
