It is ok when people affirm you. It is ok for them to encourage and support you. But it is not ok for you to rely on them to make you happy. You aren't fair to the people in your life when you expect from them what they can't give. We can become so preoccupied with our own concerns that we forget easily others might have their own issues too.
This isn't good for you or for others as we end up being disappointed. Joel Osteen warns us against relying on people. "They will disappoint you", he shouts. That is so true. People can only give what they have. It isn't their fault if they can't support you, approve of you and make you feel good. Perhaps, it is because they aren't happy themselves.
But you have God to rely on. He created you. He knows you. He desires nothing but your happiness. He can neither lie nor disappoint you. He keeps His promises. He has approved of you. He declared "you are wonderfully made". You don't need to go out of your way to win people's approval. All He asks of you is "be self-sufficient in Christ's sufficiency.
