"Charity", according to the Scriptures, "covers a multitude of sin". Why and how? The why question is simple. It is in our very nature to be charitable. Sin is a betrayal of that nature. When we are charitable, we are actually our true selves. Thus, sin and its consequences have no place in us.
"Covers" in this context is not in the criminal sense of "covering up" but in the soteriological sense of restoring us to our true nature... good people in the image of God, the imago Dei. And the Dei, God, is Love, charity. So, the how question is answered with reference to our passover experience.
Every single act of charity is a passover from who we are not to who we truly are. And as we passed through the "red sea" so are our sins buried, covered and our true selves revealed. For the red sea is the water of baptism or the blood of martyrs, the pains we bear in being charitable.
