Capsule for the Day
Ash Wednesday, the beginning of a season of discipline. A time to face ourselves, make the big decisions of life, and repent. "I don't want to be the person I have become. I can't keep being a slave to my past, to my failings, to my addictions, when I have a father who can set me free".
The story of the prodigal son comes to mind here (Luke 15:11-32). He had to choose freedom over slavery, sonship over being a servant. Choice is the core of the Lenten exercise. We have to choose to pray, to give alms, to do penance, to fast. In choosing these exercises, we free ourselves.
However, our biggest drawback in these exercises is our memory. It plays back the many times we have failed to do these exercises. So, we get discouraged. But we can't pray unless we pray. For it is in prayer that our bad memories are healed by the good memory... "you are forgiven".
