Capsule for the Day
Fasting, we are all getting into it. We fast from food, from alcohol, from many different things. Some of us even fast from our bad habits. Recently, Pope Francis asked us to fast from words that hurt, from anger, worries, whinging, and from many other vices. We all know how to fast from...
But there is another way of fasting that is often not talked about - to fast on what we don't like or on things we find difficult to do. For instance, to fast on forgiveness; to forgive those who have hurt us or betrayed us. Or, to fast on prayer; praying our way through life, and for our "enemies".
It seems to be harder "to fast on" than it is "to fast from". No wonder there is much talk about fasting from... But the genius of our Catholic Faith is a combination of both. We have to learn how to fast from bitterness in order to fast on forgiveness... This teaching is drawn from Isaiah 58:3-8.
