Capsule for the Day
The Daily Capsule
Giving alms to the poor is something many of us do naturally. We are good at giving out things to those who do not have and those who are disadvantaged. We know it is an injustice to have too much and throw away our excesses, while many are dying of starvation. So, we give alms.
But is almsgiving all about giving what we have? Have we considered giving who we are? Sometimes, what the poor need isn't the money, the material stuff, but the personal touch, the listening ears, the closeness of a fellow human being who could feel what they feel and see who they are.
There is no doubt it is easier to give out stuff and get rid of the beggar. But it is hard work to be the good Samaritan, to clean the wounds, and actually be a neighbour not a giver of things. And many times, this is all that almsgiving entails... to get into the mess of the other and be a friend.
