Capsule for the Day
"Love even your sins", Meister Eckhart advised, "for they will make you love God more". Very often, this text is taken out of context to mean "keep sinning" or "it is ok to sin". But on the flip-side, the text reflects Paul's teaching in Roman 5:20 "where sin abounds, grace abounds even more".
The beauty of Meister's text lies in its call to love. The ancient text of the preface for matrimony has "love is our origin, ... our calling, love is our destiny... But love doesn't ok evil. He, Love, God, says NO to sin and all its empty promises. So, why will Meister asking us to love even our sins?
But when we reread the text, we come to appreciate Meister's point. To love, from the text, is to acknowledge. For when we acknowledge our sins, we come to love God. We realise suddenly that God loves in spite of sins, and that moves us to love Him more. So, love even your sins.
