Capsule for the Day
They called him Simon of Cyrene. He was a passerby. He didn't know Christ from Adam. Nor, did he meddle with the secret schemes of the Scribes and the Pharisees, chief priests and elders. He found himself in a story he knew nothing about... called to carry the cross he never bargained for.
But he is Simon of Cyrene, which means, he wasn't a Jew; a foreigner in plain terms. Matthew has it that he was compelled to carry the cross. Luke, on the other hand, said they seized him to carry the cross. Whatever it was, Simon accepted to accompany Christ through the agony.
They are many Simons of Cyrene around. They appear from nowhere, but always at the right time. Often they are strangers to us. Although they are passing by, they stop to help us carry our cross... they accompany us through the worst... not minding whose cross it is, they carry...
