Capsule for the Day
"Something prevented them from recognising Him". What is this thing? Luke doesn't explicitly mention what it is. But he gives us a clue when he alludes to their disappointment in the Messiah. So, their choice to abandon Jerusalem and move to Emmaus was as a result of their disappointment.
But that wasn't all, they were obsessed with their own criteria of the Messiah that they couldn't recognise who the Messiah truly is. This, from Luke's point of view seemed to have prevented them from recognising Christ. And many a time it is also what prevents us from recognising Christ.
Disappointment throws us off balance. It makes us to give up on ourselves and on others. Worst of all, it makes us to lose hope and to give in to depression. In its extreme, we abandon the Risen Lord and go our own way. But He doesn't abandon us. He comes to us and walks with us.
