Capsule for the Day
Our whole life is ritual oriented. Even those who are not religious, celebrate one ritual or another. Ritual generally serves as our anchor of connection. It is simply repeated actions or ceremonies with a particular intention. The Eucharist is one of our rituals. It makes the past present.
In the Eucharist, we remember the saving actions of Christ on the Cross, when He gave Himself up for us. By remembering, we thank... and Eucharist means thanksgiving. By remembering, we also participate in a spousal bond of the Lover, Christ and the Beloved, us. For we are married.
Like all marital relationships, "the exchange of bodies" ratifies the marital bond. Christ gave up His Body for us, so that we may in turn give up our body for Him. Thus, the Eucharist is a marriage feast, prefiguring our eternal union with God. Participating in the Eucharist is living heaven on earth.
