Capsule for the Day
After reading the last Capsule for the Day on the Law of Talion, Joe McKernan, shared this with me: "sometimes I think of it this way: Jesus took the Law of Talion's 'tune' and 'changed the words'. Instead of 'eye for eye'... It became 'mercy for mercy' and 'forgiveness for forgiveness'.
I find this very insightful and very true. Jesus said "blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy". Furthermore, He said "for if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will forgive yours too". But if you don't forgive them, you will not be forgiven" (Matthew 6:14-15).
So, the Talion's law of hatred for hatred is replaced by the Law of Mercy that absorbs hatred, and destroys it from within by "fore-giving" hatred with non-hatred. This law of Mercy hangs on the Cross; Christ absorbed man's hatred, but forgave him that he may in turn forgive others.
