Capsule for the Day
Matthew's Gospel is big on the Divine Power of God in Christ Jesus. It is the power that heals diseases; the power that even the winds and the seas obey; the power that breaks into the kingdom of darkness and sets free those chained by the devils. Even the devils know He is the Son of God.
But it is not enough to know Him, one has to love Him and this involved being set free from the devils. For devils make a person unfit for God's love and unworthy of being loved by God. We see this in the demoniacs. They were chained from God's love and left in the tomb of hatred and violence.
This accounts for their cry "have you come here to torment us before our time?" Hatred can't withstand God's love. For it is tormented and overcome by love. That is why Christ commands us "to love our enemies and do good to them". For in loving, we make present the Divine Power God.
